Baseball Selected To Fort Worth Regional

May 25, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team has been selected to participate in the Fort Worth, Texas Regional as the field for the 2009 NCAA Tournament was announced Monday morning on a nationally televised ESPN broadcast.

The Beavers will be the No. 3 seed for the regional, which also includes No. 1 and host TCU, No. Texas A&M and No. 4 Wright State. Oregon State will square off against Texas A&M in the Beavers' first round game, with times and dates to be announced shortly.

'We are excited to earn a regional berth,' head coach Pat Casey said. 'We feel that this will be a competitive regional, one that is going to take the best from each team. We are going to get to work here in Corvallis and prepare for the trip. We are coming off a good weekend of play at Stanford and want to improve on it further.'

Oregon State earned an at-large berth after finishing the regular season with a 35-17 overall record and 15-12 mark in Pacific-10 Conference play. The Beavers took 2-of-3 from Stanford this past weekend, winning 5-0 on Friday night and 5-2 on Sunday. The 15-12 record is the team's first winning league mark since 2006 when the Beavers went 16-7.

Oregon State took care of business late in the season, going 4-1 over its last five games and 10-5 in the last 15. In the last five games, which included two wins over Oregon and a 7-6 loss to Stanford, OSU's pitchers limited opponents to a .188 batting average while posting a 2.45 earned run average. Tyler Waldron went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA over that stretch, while freshman Sam Gaviglio posted a three-hit, complete game shutout of Stanford on Friday night.

The regional berth is Oregon State's 10th all-time dating back to 1952, and its fourth in the last five years. In its three most recent NCAA Tournament appearances, 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Beavers advanced to the College World Series in Omaha where they won consecutive national titles, in '06 and '07. In doing so, Oregon State became just the fifth program in NCAA history to earn consecutive titles.

Oregon State has played 50 games all-time in the NCAA Tournament, earning a 32-18 (.640) mark. The Beavers are 15-11 in NCAA Regional games (.577) and are 10-1 in such games over their last three regional berths.

Casey is the program's all-time winningest coach in tournament games, going 27-6.

TCU is the regional's No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with a 36-16 overall record and 15-5 mark in Mountain West Conference. The Horned Frogs are an at-large team after losing to Utah in the MWC Tournament.

Texas A&M is the regional's No. 2 seed and finished the regular season with a 36-22 record and 14-13 record in Big 12 Conference play. The Aggies went 6-6 in their last 12 games. Texas A&M was also an at-large berth.

Wright State is the regional's No. 4 seed after winning the Horizon League. Wright State finished the 2009 season with a 33-28 overall record and 14-12 mark in Horizon League games.
