May 28, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's 2008-09 men's golf season came to a close Thursday with a 29th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Toledo, Ohio.
The Wildcats were one of six teams not to complete the third round due to darkness. Final placings for both teams and individuals unable to finish were determined by scores in relation to par at the time play was suspended. Arizona's 52-over-par tally placed the team 29th out of 30 teams. The Wildcats were on pace for its low round of the tournament before players were called from the course.
Oklahoma State finished the 54 holes with a three-under total of 849, the only team to finish stroke play under par. North Carolina State's Matt Hill earned individual medalist honors with a six-under 207 total. He topped the 156-man field by two strokes.
The 2009 NCAA Men's golf Championships feature a format change in which the top eight teams following three rounds of stroke play advance to the match play portion of the event, which begins Friday. The two remaining teams following tomorrow's quarterfinal and semifinal matches will play for the national championship on Saturday.
Leading the way for the Wildcats individually was sophomore Jonathan Khan, who finished in a tie for 72nd place at 10-over par. He was on-under on the day through 14 holes when play was suspended. The Tucson, Ariz., native was the only Arizona player to finish in the top half of the championship field.
The 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships continue at the Inverness Club, a par-71, 7,255-yard course.
