May 29, 2009
BERKELEY - California women's tennis freshman Jana Juricova and sophomore Mari Andersson each received selections to the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division I Women's All-America Team today (May 29). Juricova became the 14th Golden Bear to earn both singles and doubles honors in the same year; with Andersson's doubles selection pushing Cal's total All-America selections to 79.
Andersson and Juricova received the No. 3-ranking as a doubles team in the final ITA poll, released May 29. Earlier in the week, the tandem claimed Cal's fifth NCAA doubles championship title as they defeated the No. 4-ranked Stanford team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette. Andersson and Juricova were named to the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship all-tournament team and helped the Bears win the doubles point in dual matches 17 times as they finished with a 25-3 record when teamed up. Andersson's doubles record stood at 25-5 at season's end with Juricova leading the team with an impressive 36-8 mark.
As a singles player, Juricova led the team with a 39-7 record as she posted a 17-4 mark in dual play with 15 wins at the top court. Juricova also took home two individual tournament crowns last fall as the 2008 Saint Mary's Invitational singles champion and the 2008 Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational singles champion.
Both players were recently named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team with Juricova earning Freshman of the Year honors. The Bears as a team (22-5, 7-1 Pac-10) received the No. 4 ranking in the final Campbell's/ITA College Tennis Rankings and finished as the NCAA runner-up for the second consecutive season after falling to No. 3 Duke in the national championship match. Cal started the season with the No. 2 ranking and never dropped out of the top 10 as the Bears took home a second-place conference finish.
