Masterson Qualifies For Regional Final in 1,500m
May 29, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon State freshman Casey Masterson qualified for the 1,500-meters finals, finishing fifth of 11 in heat 1 at the NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championship on Friday.
“She put herself in really good position again today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “She stayed in the top five the entire race. A group of six broke off with a lap to go, and she was in that top six. She was with the top four in the last turn and they gapped her a little down the straight away. This region is the best in the country and she has stuck her nose in it and run very well.”
Masterson broke the school record in the 1,500-meters for the third time this season running a time of 4:25.02, the ninth fastest time of 21 entries on Friday at Hayward Field.
“Qualifying for the finals was a huge accomplishment for Casey,” Sullivan said. “We are really pleased with her effort. This is another great step in her young career. First she made the Pac-10 final now make the regional final. She now continues on with a great first outdoor season.”
The 1,500-meter final is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. The top four finishers from each of the two heats on Friday plus the next four best times make up the 12 runner finals field.
The top five finishers in the finals qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Championship meet. All that qualified for the regional finals will be under consideration for an at-large bid based on times run through the season.
Masterson is only the third Beaver runner to qualify for regionals since the programs return in 2004. Masterson’s predecessors include Lauren Denfeld and Ashley Younce.
