No. 11 Women's Rowing Races Through First Day of NCAAs

May 29, 2009

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Oregon State women's rowing team completed a competitive first day of the NCAA Championships Friday. All three crews qualified to their respective Third Level Finals on the Cooper River to take place Sunday morning.

'I thought all the boats were in a range that was pretty much expected,' said head coach Emily Ford. 'I think we raced at a similar speed to what we practice at.'

The Beavers' No. 11 Varsity 8+ crew started the day in the second of three varsity heats. Pac-10 rival No. 2 California, as well as No. 7 Michigan State, No. 9 Wisconsin, and No. 10 Brown, made up Oregon State's competition. After a slow start, the Beavers found themselves looking up at the other four crews after the first 1,000 meters. A strong third 500-meter piece allowed OSU to overtake the Badgers for fourth, where the Beavers would finish and earn a spot in the afternoon repechage.

Needing a top-three finish in a seven-crew heat, the V8+ once again found itself looking ahead at the field, 2.11 seconds behind Wisconsin after the first 1,000 meters. The Beavers cut the gap in the second half of the race and used a strong final 500 meters to once again overtake Wisconsin and cross the line .23 seconds ahead of the Badgers. The sixth place finish sends the V8+ to the Third Level Final of the varsity division, which starts at 8:15 a.m. PT on Sunday.

Oregon State's Second Varsity 8+ had similar luck in their morning heat. Pac-10 rival Washington was able to take the lead off the start and battled with Virginia for first throughout the race, while Ohio State was able to solidify their spot at third. The Beavers were left to overcome an early 3.54 deficit against fourth place Harvard. Oregon State was able to consistently gain ground over the rest of the race, and finished with the fastest 500 meters of the field that nearly pushed them past the Buckeyes for third.

The 2V8+ started stronger in the afternoon repechage, racing to a third place spot behind Princeton and Wisconsin after 1,000 meters. OSU would not be able to hold the spot however, falling to seventh with just 500 meters to go. The Beavers recovered over the final stretch, pushing themselves back to fourth place, but were unable to overcome Clemson for third, sending OSU to the Third Level Final to be raced on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. PT.

The Beavers Open 4+ went into the repecharge looking to improve on their fifth place finish in the morning heat. After falling behind in the seven-crew repechage initially, Oregon State battled back and was fourth at the 1,000-meter mark. The second half of the race saw the Beavers attempt to hold off a charge from Princeton, who was able to cross the finish line just 0.87 seconds ahead of OSU. The O4+ will be back in action on Sunday morning at 6:45 a.m. PT in the Third Level Final of their division.

Throughout all of the races, Oregon State's crew showed the ability to finish strong. 'Its something we work hard on in practice,' said Coach Ford of the Beavers closing speed. 'All the boats did well today in the last 500 meters. Its the third 500 meters that needs some work.'

The Beavers will run through two practice sessions on Saturday before finishing the NCAA Championships with their Sunday races. Check back with for results from Sunday's racing.
