No. 11 Women's Crew Rows Strong At NCAA Championships
May 31, 2009
CAMDEN, N.J. - The Oregon State women's rowing team raced tough in three races on Sunday, including a second place finish by the Second Varsity 8+ in the final day of the NCAA Championships on Cooper River.
'I thought the team did a really nice job. They raced consistently throughout the weekend,' said head coach Emily Ford. 'I though all three boats raced their best race on the last day, and that is what you want to do in a competition like this.'
The Beavers' No. 11 Varsity 8+ crew was the last of three Oregon State boats to race and got off to a slow start, trailing third place No. 9 Wisconsin by 4.59 seconds after the first 500 meters. Oregon State improved its time over the rest of the race and saved its fastest split for the final 500, which allowed the Beavers to overtake the Badgers for third place in the Third Level Final. The finish gave the Beavers 15th place in the NCAA Championships.
Oregon State's 2V8+ came off the starting line last in its Third Final of four crews. It took the Beavers through the first 1,000 meters to push forward, and with 500 meters left to go, the Beavers had overtaken Dartmouth and set their sights on second-place Harvard. The 2V8+ continued to build momentum and raced past Harvard just before the finish to capture second place and capture 14th place overall.
The Open 4+ was the first Beaver crew to hit the water and spent a majority of the race closing the gap between themselves and second place Princeton. The Beavers came within 1.3 seconds of Princeton with 500 meters remaining and continued to close the gap, but the distance was too short and the Tigers were able to hold off the Beavers by just 0.86 seconds. The third-place finish in the Third Level Final by the O4+ gave it a 15th place finish overall.
Coach Ford is excited about the effect that the NCAA Championships will have on the program going into the future. 'Getting this team exposed to the racing at this level and at this event is huge. I think they have a much better understanding of what it takes to compete at this level. They are walking away feeling satisfied with what they have done, but hungry for more success in the future.'
