No. 16 Oregon State Ready For IRA Championships
June 3, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's rowing team is finishing preparations for its final regatta of the season, when it travels to Rancho Cordova, Calif. to participate in its 16th consecutive Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships beginning on Thursday.
For the first time in its history, the IRA Championships will be held on the west coast, with Lake Natoma being the destination. The Beavers are familiar with the course, having raced there for the Pac-10 Championships as well as the Head of the American in the fall of 2008.
Joining Oregon State at the IRAs will be Pac-10 rivals California, Stanford, and Washington. The Bears were voted the No. 1 Varsity 8+ seed by the coaches of the 22 schools involved. Stanford was close behind, receiving the No.2 seed, while the Huskies came in at No. 5. The Beavers V8+ received the 16-seed in the 22-crew field.
Oregon State will face immediate competition from California, as the two V8+ are scheduled to race in the first heat of the day on Thursday at 8 a.m. They will be joined by No. 17 Princeton, No. 9 Northeastern, and No. 8 Cornell. A top-2 finish in the heat will send the Beavers to the semifinals on Friday. A finish outside the top-2 will force them to race in one of four repechages on Thursday afternoon.
The Beavers' Freshman 8+ will also travel to Lake Natoma and is seeded 15th in the F8+ division. They will race in the first of three heats and will be joined by five other crews. Harvard (3) is the highest seeded crew in the heat, while California (4), Syracuse (9), Navy (10), and Gonzaga (16) will also join OSU when the race begins at 9:36 a.m. The winning crew will advance to the finals while the remaining five crews will race in the repechages on Friday.
The Open 4+ will be Oregon State's third crew to race when they take the water in the first of two heats at 10:12 a.m. The Beavers will be joined by California, Cornell, George Washington, MIT, and Wisconsin. OSU will need a first-place finish to advance to the O4+ finals, anything less will send it to the repechages on Friday.
