June 3, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State freshman pitcher Sam Gaviglio has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, as announced by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday.
Gaviglio had an outstanding first season for the Beavers, winning a freshman record 10 games while posting a 2.73 earned run average. Gaviglio appeared in 18 games, with six starts. He worked 62 2/3 innings, collecting one save and 55 strikeouts while walking just nine. Opponents batted only .200 against him.
A native of Ashland, Ore., Gaviglio won his last seven decisions. His last start came in the Fort Worth Regional opener against Texas A&M, where he picked up the win after holding the Aggies to six hits and a run over 5 2/3 innings.
In May alone, Gaviglio was 4-0 with a 1.55 ERA in six appearances, including four starts. During that stretch, he threw the Beavers' only shutout of the season and struck out 27 in 29 innings while walking just three.
Over his last two seasons, which includes his senior season at Ashland High School, Gaviglio is 23-1.
It is the second such honor for Gaviglio over the past week. Last week, he was named to the Pacific-10 Conference Honorable Mention squad.
