USC and Hawaii To Meet In Football In 2012 And 2013
June 3, 2009
USC and Hawaii will play a home-and-home football series in 2012 and 2013, Trojan athletic director Mike Garrett announced today.
USC will host the Warriors in the Coliseum on Sept. 1, 2012, then the Trojans will travel to Honolulu for a game on Aug. 31, 2013. Both are season openers for Troy.
Also, the date of USC's previously-scheduled 2010 opener at Hawaii has been moved from Sept. 4 to Sept. 2. The Thursday night game will kick off at 5:30 p.m. in Honolulu and be shown live nationally on an ESPN station.
'We're excited to be able to add some more games against Hawaii to our schedule,' said USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'It's a great way for us to open our seasons in 2012 and 2013. This is a matchup of two fine programs that have a history dating back nearly 80 years.
'I know our players and fans enjoy traveling to Honolulu for the game, and we get good crowd support from the many Trojan fans living in Hawaii who get to see us play. And it works out well for Hawaii coming to the Coliseum, because they have such a strong fan base in Southern California.'
USC has beaten Hawaii in all 6 previous meetings. The Trojans won in 1930, 52-0, in the Coliseum, then the next 3 times defeated the Warriors in Honolulu--in the 1935 season, 38-6 (the game actually was played on New Year's Day of 1936 in what was the first Poi Bowl, later called the Pineapple Bowl), again in 1978, 21-5 (en route to the national championship), and in the 1999 season opener, 62-7--before posting a 61-32 victory in 2003 in the Coliseum (again, as part of a national title run) and then a 63-17 season-opening win in Honolulu in 2005.
Besides Hawaii and its annual meeting with Notre Dame, USC's other non-conference opponents through 2013 are Ohio State, Boston College, Virginia, Syracuse, Minnesota and San Jose State.
USC was 12-1 in 2008 and beat Penn State in the Rose Bowl. The Trojans are riding a streak of 7 consecutive Pac-10 titles, BCS bowl appearances, 11-win seasons and AP Top 4 finishes under Carroll.
