No. 16 Men's Rowing Finishes First Day of IRAs

June 4, 2009

Rancho Cordova, Calif. - Oregon State's No. 16 Varsity 8+ crew finished second in their afternoon repechage, and the Beavers' Freshman 8+ and Open 4+ each raced to fourth place finishes in their respective heats on the first day of racing at the IRA Championships on Thursday.

The V8+ began the day for the Beavers in the first heat of the varsity division. Heat favorite and top-seeded California was able to take the early lead, while Oregon State battled with 17-seed Princeton for fourth place, and Cornell and Northeastern engaged in a bow-to-bow race for second. The Beavers were unable to gain any ground on the Tigers over the rest of the course and their fifth place finish sent them to an afternoon repechage.

Needing a victory in the four-crew repechage, the Beavers were matched up against 11th seeded Syracuse, as well as 15-seed MIT and Holy Cross (21). Oregon State found itself in a tightly-packed race after 500 meters, with Holy Cross and MIT each within a second of the Beavers while Syracuse took the early lead. The Beavers spent the next 1,500 meters fighting off MIT, while Holy Cross fell into fourth place and Syracuse extended its lead. Despite racing the fastest final 500 meter piece, the Beavers were unable to overtake the Orange and finished one spot out of the A and B semifinals.

The V8+ will now take part in the third semifinal on Friday for a chance to advance to the Second Level Final to be held on Saturday. The Beavers will go up against Navy (13), San Diego (22), Pennsylvania (18) and Holy Cross (21) in a race scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. By winning the semifinal, the Beavers can advance to the Grand Finals, while a second place finish will result in a berth in the Petite Finals. If they finish outside of the top-two, Oregon State will need one of the fastest five times of the remaining 14 crews to advance to the Petite Finals. If not, a berth in the Third Level Finals will await them.

In the F8+ division, Oregon State used the first 500 meters to push ahead of Pacific Northwest rival Gonzaga. Although the Beavers remained within striking distance of Navy and Syracuse, who were battling for third, OSU became focused on holding off the hard-charging Bulldogs for fifth place. The two crews were within a second of each other entering the final 500 meter stretch before the Beavers pulled ahead and crossed the line 1.58 seconds in front of the Zags.

Despite the late-race push, the finish put the Beavers in the repechage to be raced on Friday, at 9:36 a.m. There the F8+ will face competition from California (4), Stanford (8), Northeastern (12), and George Washington (17). By winning the repechage, OSU would advance to the Grand Finals. A second or third place finish would result in will send the Beavers to the Petite Finals, while anything less would result in the Beavers racing in the Third Level Final.

In the Beavers' final morning race, the O4+ took the water at 10:13 a.m. in the first of two heats. After 500 meters, each crew had established itself in what would be the final order of finish, with Wisconsin out in front followed by a Pac-10 crew from California. The Beavers were able to establish a commanding lead over George Washington from the beginning, however they were unable to gain ground against third place Cornell and eventually came through with a fourth place finish.

The result means that the O4+ will join the other two Beaver crews racing on Friday, as they take on California, Princeton, and Harvard in a repechage that is scheduled to begin at 8:24 a.m. A first place finish will send the Beavers to the Grand Finals, while anything less will result in a berth in the Petite Finals.
