California Volleyball Set to Open Season at Nevada Invitational
June 5, 2009
The California volleyball team has reached an agreement to open the 2009 season at the Nevada Marriott Courtyard/Fairfield Invitational (Aug. 28-30), head coach Rich Feller announced today. The Golden Bears will cancel the previously scheduled home tournament as host of the Cal Molten Classic. Cal will face UC Irvine (Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m.), Saint Mary's (Aug. 29 at 4:30 p.m.) and Connecticut (Aug. 30 at 11 a.m.) at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno, Nev. The Bears will not play tournament host Nevada.
Cal's first home match will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. against Eastern Washington in what is now called the Molten/Hilton Garden Inn Classic at Haas Pavilion. Earlier in the day, Eastern Washington faces San Jose State in a 1 p.m. match. The Bears close out the two-day tourney with a match of their own against SJSU on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Cal received the No. 6 ranking in the final Bison/AVCA poll, after completing the 2008 season with the best record in school history at 26-7 (.788). The Bears also recorded a program-best 13 victories in conference play (defeating every team at least once for the first time in school history) and finished third in the Pac-10 (13-5).
The Bears advanced to the NCAA regional final for the second consecutive year where they fell to eventual NCAA champion, top-seeded Penn State in the University Park region. Cal set school records with new marks for winning streaks by claiming 29 consecutive sets without a loss and winning 16 straight home matches.
