June 8, 2009
SKILLMAN, N.J. - The California women's tennis team was selected as one of 15 host institutions for the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Kick-Off Weekend Thursday (June 4). The top-seeded Golden Bears will host the second-annual event for the second time as they welcome Sacramento State, Colorado, and Utah to the Hellman Tennis Complex, Jan. 29 and 30, 2010.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features 15 host sites with four teams at each site vying to advance to the ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championships. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 12-15, 2010, at the A. C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc. (hosted by the Univ. of Wisconsin).
The No. 1 team at each site will face the No. 4 team and the No. 2 team will face the No. 3 team. Two matches are guaranteed for each school; the winners/losers will each play the following day. Complete draft results and ITA Kick-Off Weekend information can be viewed at www.itatennis.com.
Cal hosted Long Beach State, North Carolina State, and Washington in 2009, and defeated Long Beach State in its first dual match of the season before taking out Washington for one of 16 spots at the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Bears completed one of the most successful seasons in school history with a second-straight NCAA runner-up finish and ranked No. 4 in the ITA College Tennis Rankings. Cal posted a 22-5 record and went 7-1 in Pac-10 play for second place and a 28th consecutive postseason appearance.
