Four Bruins Named To U.S. Roster For FIFA Confederations Cup
June 8, 2009
UCLA soccer alumni Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Marvell Wynne and Benny Feilhaber have been named to the U.S. 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup roster. The U.S. will play Italy, Brazil and Egypt in the tournament, which will be held in South Africa from June 14-28.
First up for the U.S. is a match against defending World Cup champion Italy on Monday, June 15. The match will be televised live on ESPN at 11:25 am PT. On Thursday, June 18, the U.S. will face Brazil (ESPN2, 6:55 am PT), and on Sunday, June 21, the team wraps up Group B play with a match against Egypt (ESPN2, 11:25 am PT).
All four Bruins were on the U.S. roster for World Cup qualifying games this past week. Bocanegra and Wynne started against Costa Rica on Wednesday, and Bocanegra and Bornstein were in the starting lineup against Honduras on Saturday. Bocanegra scored the game-winning goal for the U.S. in the Honduras game with a diving header that capped a 2-1 comeback victory, the United States' first comeback win in World Cup qualifying since 1985. Feilhaber came in as a second-half sub and played superbly, nearly notching an assist with a pinpoint cross that found Clint Dempsey alone in the box, but Dempsey missed the shot. Dempsey made up for it in the 68th minute, however, when he headed a corner kick down in the box for Bocanegra to get to for the game-winner.
The U.S. is currently in second place with 10 points in the final round hexagonal for World Cup qualifying. The top 3 teams in the group qualify to the World Cup in 2010. The next qualifying game for the U.S. is Aug. 12 at Mexico.
Another UCLA alumnus is participating in World Cup Qualifying. Afshin Ghotbi, who played at UCLA in 1983, is now the head coach for Iran's National Team. Ghotbi, who was appointed as head coach in April, coached his first World Cup qualifying game on Saturday, leading his team to a 0-0 draw with North Korea. Iran is in fourth place with seven points in its group and next faces United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, June 10.
