June 10, 2009
Prior to inclement weather forcing the suspension of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, senior Nicole Leach ran away with the top time in the prelims of the 400m hurdles in her first step towards regaining the NCAA crown.
Leach won heat three and and ran the fastest qualifier of all competitors with her time of 56.46 to advance to Thursday's semifinals.
Senior Rhonda Watkins was warming up for the long jump and junior Katy Viuf was warming up for the pole vault when the meet was suspended due to heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Senior Krystin Lacy was also supposed to run in the open 400m prelims, but all events were suspended when the storm came in.
Also on Thursday, junior Krishna Curry competed in the prelims of the 800m, finishing fifth in her heat and 21st overall in a time of 2:08.63.
