UCLA's Casey Haerther Drafted by L.A. Angels in Fifth Round

LOS ANGELES - Junior infielder Casey Haerther has been selected in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Haerther, the 171st overall selection of the draft, becomes the seventh Bruin chosen in the top five rounds of the draft in the last four years.
Haerther has batted .305 with 22 home runs, 34 doubles, 109 RBI and 88 runs in 147 career games (134 starts) the past three seasons. He has twice earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors (2008, 2009) and was named an All-Tournament Team selection at the 2008 NCAA Fullerton Regional. As a sophomore in 2008, he finished second on the team in batting average (.324) and first in home runs (12) and RBI (52).
After batting .263 in 37 games as a freshman in 2007, Haerther compiled a standout sophomore campaign in 2008, capped by a Pac-10 and school-record 7-for-7 effort with four doubles, four runs and four RBI in a win at Arizona (March 29). He finished his sophomore season as UCLA's leader in home runs (12), RBI (52) and doubles (23) and was second on the team in batting average (.324).
Haerther continued his offensive production in 2009, batting .305 with nine homers and 42 RBI in 52 games.
