June 11, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Senior women's volleyball player Foluke Akinradewo and senior men's gymnast Sho Nakamori were honored today when the 2008-09 Pacific-10 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners were announced.
A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. The Pac-10 recently renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who is retiring at the end of June after serving 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.
The Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Breakfast held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments next March.
Akinradewo, the 2008 Volleyball Magazine Co-National Player of the Year, finished her career with the best hitting percentage ever recorded by an NCAA Division I player (.446), breaking the previous record by more than 20 points. She also posted the second-best single-season hitting percentage in Pac-10 and school history, coming in only behind the record of .499 she set in 2007. In helping Stanford to its third consecutive Pac-10 title and a third straight run to the national title match, the four-time AVCA All-American and two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year led the team with 4.17 points per set and was third on the team with 3.19 kills per set.
Nakamori, an eight-time NCAA All-American, captained the Cardinal team that captured the 2009 NCAA title. A finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award, he picked up three All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Championships and claimed four individual event titles, including the all-around crown, at the 2009 MPSF Championships. For his efforts, Nakamori was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Year. He was recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and has been an eight-time member of the U.S. National Team.
