Kamendova Garners Year-End Regional Ranking
June 12, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University sophomore Ekaterina Kamendova finished her 2009 season ranked in the top 30 of the Northwest Region, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently announced. As a team the Cougars finished their 2008 campaign 11th in the region.
A native of Moscow, Russia, Kamendova completed the 2008-09 season with 13 singles victories after fighting back from a potential season-ending injury when she suffered a collapsed lung early in the spring season at Weber State. Kamendova endured two surgeries to repair the lung then returned to the court one month later to resume her season. She held down the No. 1 singles spot all year and captured the No. 1 singles title at the 2008 Cougar Classic last fall. Additionally, she earned the team's Strength and Conditioning Award at the year-end banquet.
Last month Kamendova was named the Northwest Region recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, given to a collegiate women's tennis player who displays dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.. Kamendova is the second Cougar in the last three years to win the award as Marjolein van de Ven was the regional winner in 2007.
