Nic Wise Picked for Team USA Trials

June 12, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 15, 2009) - Arizona point guard Nic Wise of Houston has been added to the  USA Men's World University Games Team Trials camp June 16-18 in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Basketball announced today.

Wise and University of Illinois center Mike Tisdale (Riverton, Ill.)  were late additions to the trials. Wise pulled his name out of consideration for the NBA Draft last week and therefore became eligible for Team USA activities as a senior-to-be at Arizona in 2009-10.

Wise, who posted 15.7 ppg. and 4.6 apg. in 2008-09, was a member of the 2009 All-Pacific 10 Conference second team and helped lead Arizona to the 2009 NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

'Nic has good chance of making the team, especially if the coaches select three point guards,' said Arizona assistant coach Book Richardson. 'It's going to be a competitive camp and surely will help Nic heading into his senior year and our first season' under new head coach Sean Miller.

His primary competition should come from Sherron Collins of Kansas, Corey Fisher of Villanova and Talor Battle of Penn State, among other guards in the camp, Richardson said.

After the trials involving 17 players, the team of 12 selected team members will work out June 19-24 in Colorado Springs before its foreign competition.

The World University Games is organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The 2009 men's basketball competition will take place July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia, with 24 men's teams expected to compete for gold. Eligible athletes for the USA team must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have remaining NCAA athletic eligibility.

Previously announced participants for the Team Trials were: James Anderson (Oklahoma State), Talor Battle (Penn State),  Trevor Booker (Clemson), Craig Brackins (Iowa State),  Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia),   Sherron Collins (Kansas), Corey Fisher (Villanova), Lazar Hayward (Marquette),  Robbie Hummel (Purdue),   JaJuan Johnson (Purdue), Dominique Jones (USF), Quincy Pondexter (Washington), Deon Thompson (North Carolina), Evan Turner (Ohio State) and Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi State),

University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan has been selected by USA Basketball to serve as head coach of the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team. Ryan's two assistant coaches will be collegiate head coaches Frank Haith of the University of Miami and Rob Jeter of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The 2009-2012 Men's Junior National Team Committee is chaired by Jim Boeheim, head coach at Syracuse University, and includes NCAA appointees Lorenzo Romar (head coach, University of Washington); Bruce Weber (head coach, University of Illinois) and Roy Williams (head coach, University of North Carolina); and athlete representative Jay Williams, a member of the 2002 USA Basketball World Championship Team.

The United States, which has claimed a medal in every World University Games men's basketball competition since beginning play in 1965, has captured a record 13 gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals in the 18 WUGs in which a USA Basketball squad has competed. The U.S., which owns a 125-7 won-loss record in World University Games play, captured six of the first seven gold medals awarded in World University Games competition and strung together six consecutive gold medals from 1989 through 1999.
