June 16, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford outfielder Alissa Haber and shortstop Ashley Hansen have been named to the USA Women's National Team roster announced USA Softball yesterday. The pair, along with Cardinal alum Lauren Lappin, will compete with Team USA in a number of international events this summer.
Both Haber and Hansen are veterans of the USA Junior National Team, having helped the squad to gold medals at the 2006 Junior Pan American Championship in Puerto Rico and the 2007 ISF Junior World Championship in the Netherlands. Hansen was the only high school player invited to USA Softball's selection camp for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
At Stanford this year, Haber and Hansen ranked first and second in the nation in doubles, with 26 and 24 on the year, respectively. They were the first Stanford pair to hit .400 or better in the same year, and the first to each post 80-hit seasons. Both first-team All-Pac-10 selections, Haber and Hansen were also named 2009 NFCA All-Americans.
Both players are scheduled to compete at the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C. July 4-12, and the KFC World Cup of Softball presented by Six Flags in Oklahoma City, Okla. July 16-20. Haber, a rising senior, and Hansen, a rising sophomore, were two of the three current collegiate players named to the 18-player roster for the events, joining Mississippi State catcher Chelsea Bramlett as the youngest players chosen.
Haber will also be part of the roster for the Japan Cup, which takes place in Sendai, Japan, July 31- Aug. 2. Hansen will also compete at the Pan American Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela, July 31-Aug. 9.
Lappin, a 2008 Olympian who graduated from Stanford in 2006, will be part of the Canada Cup, the KFC World Cup of Softball and the Japan Cup teams this summer.
