Pondexter Named to World University Games Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Following three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., University of Washington senior-to-be Quincy Pondexter was one of 12 players named to the USA World University Games team. The player selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Syracuse University's Jim Boeheim.

Selected finalists for the USA World University Games Team will train June 19-24 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team will pack up and head to Belgrade, Serbia on Thursday, June 25 and begin play in The World University Games on July 1 through July 12. The University of Wisconsin's Bo Ryan will serve as the team's head coach.

Also named to the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team were: James Anderson (Oklahoma State / Junction City, Ark.); Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.); Trevor Booker (Clemson / Whitmire, S.C.); Craig Brackins (Iowa State / Palmdale, Calif.); Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.); Corey Fisher (Villanova / Bronx, N.Y.); Lazar Hayward (Marquette / Buffalo, N.Y.); Robbie Hummel (Purdue / Valparaiso, Ind.); Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.); Evan Turner (Ohio State / Chicago, Ill.); and Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi State / Brownsville, Tenn.).

Pondexter, a native of Fresno, Calif., was one of two Washington players to start all 35 games last season. He averaged 12.1 points and was second on the team with a 5.9 per game rebounding average.

In his three seasons at Washington, Pondexter owns a 10.9 per game scoring average and has 1,091 career points. Following last season, he earned the team's Industrial Award as the hardest worker and, for the second time, was named the team's Most Improved Player.

Washington ended the season with a 26-9 overall record and won its first-ever Pacific-10 Conference regular-season title with a 14-4 mark. The Huskies advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons and finished the season ranked 15th nationally.
