Track And Field Adds Seven To Incoming Freshmen Class

Stanford, Calif. - Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field Edrick Floreal announced seven additional recruits, which will be added to the group already announced in March. The group is highly talented and should provide to the depth of the nationally prominent track and field and cross country teams at Stanford.

The additions to the class of 2013 include three men and four women. The men add a pair of state champion distance runners as well as an All-America thrower. The women add a pair of hurdlers, a sprinter and a middle-distance runner.

MEN:
Graham Bazell - Columbia, Md. - (Atholton High School)

Bazell was the Class 3A Maryland State Cross Country Champion in 2008 and led his team to the state championship. Earlier in the fall, Graham broke an eight-year-old record on the very challenging Hereford cross country course, home to the Maryland state meet, by running 15:50 for 5k. Bazell has also won Maryland Class 3A track & field state championships in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. As a sophomore, he ran one of the top two-mile times in his class with a 9:04.55.

Quinn Dawson - Saline, Mich. - (Saline High School)
Dawson is a USATF and AAU Junior All-American. At the 2009 Michigan indoor state meet he won the weight throw with a state record toss of 66-4 ¾. He captured runner-up honors in the discus at the 2008 outdoor state meet and in the shot put at the 2009 indoor state meet. Dawson is the only U18 competitor at the 2008 USATF Junior Olympics to make the finals in the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw events. He holds his high school record in the shot put at 58-1 ¼. and has a personal best of 187' in the discus.

Thomas Porter - Fredericksburg, Va. - (Mountain View High School)
Thomas is a three time Footlocker National Cross Country Finalist who finished third at the 2008 Footlocker National Cross Country Championships. He is also the Virginia State cross country champion and the Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year in Virginia. During the 2009 season on the track, Porter has won Virginia State titles in the indoor 3,200 meters and the outdoor 1,600 meters, running personal bests of 9:09.01 and 4:10.03 respectively.

WOMEN:
Kala Stepter - Tucson, Az. - (Canyon Del Oro High School)

Stepter is the 2007 and 2008 Arizona state 300-meter hurdles runner-up. She has won multiple regional titles from 2005 to 2008. She is the 2008 Sun Angel Classic 300-meter hurdles champion and a five time USATF Junior Olympian. Stepter holds Canyon Del Oro's high school records in the 400 meters, 300-meter hurdles and 4x 800-meter relay. She has personal bests of 43.68 in the 300-meter hurdles, 14.71 in the 100-meter hurdles and 62.69 in the 400-meter hurdles. Her mother Latanya Sheffield is a 1988 U.S. Olympian in the 400-meter hurdles.

Alyssa Wisdom - Coral Springs, Fla. (Coral Srings High)
Wisdom placed fourth at the 2008 Florida state meet in the 100-meter dash. She was nationally ranked for both the 100 and 200 meters. Her personal bests are 11.94 in the 100 and 24.55 in the 200 meters.

Hannah Varnell - Gloucester, Va. - (Gloucester High School)
Varnell is one of the top cross country runners in the state of Virginia having finished among the top 20 cross country runners among all divisions at the State Cross Country Championships. Hannah is also an AAU Junior Olympic Champion in the 1500 meters. She has run personal bests of 4:45.16 in the 1500 meters and 2:14.94 in the 800meters.

Erin Duffy - Rapid City, South Dakota - (St Thomas More High School)
Erin is the 2006 and `07 South Dakota 300-meter hurdles state champion. Her personal best of 44.7 is amongst the top-10 all time in South Dakota high school history.
