June 22, 2009
UCLA Gymnastics head coach Valorie Kondos Field has announced the signing of Dutch National Champion Lichelle Wong (Ossendrecht, Netherlands) to a national letter of intent. Wong will joing the UCLA team this fall.
Wong, who trains at TSH Heerenveen, won her second career national all-around title this past weekend. She had previously won the Dutch national championship in 2006 and was the runner-up in 2007 and placed fifth in 2008. Wong also claimed the silver medal on the uneven bars this year and placed fifth on the balance beam. In 2007, she was a silver medalist on bars and beam and a bronze medalist on floor.
Wong represented the Netherlands at the 2007 and 2006 World Championships and in several World Cup competitions. In the 2008 Moscow World Cup, she placed fourth on bars, and in the 2006 World Cup in Ghent, she placed fourth on floor.
'Lichelle Wong is not only a great athlete, but she is also extremely artistic,' said Kondos Field. 'Combine that with the fact that she is a very bright student and excited to come to a university with such diversity not only on the campus but on the team, and she is a perfect fit to be a UCLA Bruin.'
