Arizona-Iowa Game Picked for Regional TV

PARK RIDGE, Ill.--The Arizona at Iowa football game on Sept. 19 will be televised regionally by ABC Sports, the Big Ten announced today with the rest of its pre-league television package.

Arizona's Mike Stoops returns to Iowa City for the first time as a head coach. He was a Hawkeye safety from 1981 to 1984,and brother Mark, UA's defensive coordinator, also lettered as an Iowa safety from 1986-88.

Kickoff in 70,585-seat Kinnick Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m. CDT, 12:30 p.m. in Tucson. The game will be shown in the Tucson market on KGUN-TV 9, or on ABC cable partner ESPN2.  Pac-10 television markets have the USC-Washington game slated for ABC at 12:30 p.m.

Arizona meets Iowa for the 12th time and has a narrow lead in the series, 6-5. The last game between the squads was in Tucson during the Cats' 12-1 campaign of 1998, with UA winning 35-11. The last game in Iowa City was held in 1996, with the Hawkeyes taking a 21-20 victory. UA is 3-3 in games played in Iowa City.

 Other Arizona games may be selected for television during the year, with ABC, Fox Sports Net and Versus scheduled to make game picks during the regular season. The Cats will play Southern California on ABC to close the season Dec. 5.

 

Do You Remember? ... The last two games involved ranked teams In the 1998 Iowa-Arizona game the Wildcat defense held Iowa to 28 net rushing yards, while Dennis Northcutt caught five passes for 157 yards and Trung Canidate scored two of his eventual 26 career rushing touchdowns. No. 16 Arizona won 35-11. Linebacker Marcus Bell earned Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors after an 11-tackle, two-sack game... In the last game at Iowa City, Arizona lost five turnovers (four fumbles) and No. 22 Iowa clipped UA, 21-20. UI held the Cats to 256 net yards in offense and took advantage of the turnovers to overcome its own output of 204 total yards.
