Men's Swimming Has Top Rated Recruiting Class
June 24, 2009
STANFORD-- Stanford Swimming, home to eight NCAA Championships, a record 28 consecutive Pac-10 titles and over 100 individual NCAA titles has reloaded for future, as collegeswimming.com has rated the Cardinal program with the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation.
Eight incoming athletes are ranked in the website's top-100 swimmers, with an impressive six ranked in the top-40. The top two swimmers in the 200 backstroke highlight the class, in Dallas native Matt Thompson, the fifth overall-rated recruit, and Canadian Matthew Swanston, the 10th-rated recruit.
Thompson, one of the nation's best preps, has three of the fastest times in four different events and is one of just three prep athletes nationwide to rank in the top-16 in five different disciplines.
Two Californians further bolster the nation's top class in Pasadena's Andrew Saeta (21st-rated recruit) and Antioch's Aaron Wayne (25th). Saeta has four of the top-16 times in both backstrokes, as well as the 100 and 200 freestyle. Two more swimmers possess top-16 times in Payne Montgomery (26th), a Columbia, South Carolina native, and Andrew Grinalds (35th), out of Southport, Connecticut.
'They got quality,' said collegeswimming.com's editors. 'One out of every six of the top forty-odd recruits are Stanford-bound... It's a group that should bring the national championship back to the Farm.'
Illinois native Burke Sims (Downers Grove) is rated 42nd, followed by Thomas Santoli (Davidson, NC--72nd) and Daniel Miller (St. Louis, MO--101st) to round out the class.
It will be a busy summer for Stanford Swimming as 27 athletes hope to make or already have made international competitions, including eight incoming recruits. Sixteen athletes are headed to the U.S. World Championship Trials (starting July 7 in Indianapolis), including seven recruits, while Swanston will be one of three Stanford swimmers at the Canadian Trials (starting July 8 in Montreal).
