June 25, 2009

EUGENE, Ore. -- Four Cougar alums competed during the first day of the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Bernard Lagat (WSU '99), competing for Nike, qualified for the men's 800m semifinals after running a time of 1:48.59 for 11th in the first round heats.

Lagat commented on his prelim race which was published on the USA Track & Field website www.usatf.org: 'I felt alright out there. I wanted to run fast out there but I'm still trying to learn how to run the 800 meters again. I can't even remember the last time I ran the 800. But it was a good run for me, another step in my training.'

Rickey Moody (WSU '08) had a disappointing day in the men's decathlon, scoring 2,944 points in the first four events but not finishing the 400m race, the fifth event of the 10-event decathlon. Moody opened with a 100m dash time of 11.16 seconds, long jumped 22-9 1/4 (6.94m), threw the shot put 36-5 1/2 (11.11m) and high jumped 6-5 (1.96m).

A pair of 2009 Cougar graduates did not have their best performances Thursday.

Lorraine King, running unattached, ran the 400m hurdles in a time of 59.18 seconds for 19th place, with the top 16 places advancing to the semifinals. King was the 2009 Pacific-10 intermediate hurdles champion running a PR time of 57.51.
