UW Softball's Lawrie Nominated For An ESPY
June 25, 2009
Washington softball star Danielle Lawrie has added another honor to a long list as she has been nominated for an ESPY Award, ESPN announced today.
Lawrie, a senior-to-be from Langley, B.C., led the Huskies to the NCAA softball national championship earlier this month. She was named the national collegiate player of the year, the MVP of the Women's College World Series and won the Honda Award as the nation's top softball player.
Lawrie was nominated for the Best Female College Athlete ESPY, alongside four other nominees.
The ESPYs, with actor Samuel L. Jackson serving as host, will be presented July 15 in Los Angeles, with the taped show airing July 19 on ESPN.
'I think the thing that's so cool about being nominated for an award like this is that I get to go and represent so many people who have worked to get the Husky softball program where it is today,' Lawrie said. 'I'm extremely thankful that I've gotten the chance to play with such a great group of teammates. They're the ones who make things like this possible.'
'We are proud of Danielle and all of her accomplishments this season,' said UW softball coach Heather Tarr. ' What is most impressive is her modesty and the fact that she truly believes that she couldn't have done all of this without her teammates by her side. For the impact she has made on our program this season, I believe she has an awesome chance to win the ESPY.'
Lawrie, who represented Canada at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, posted a 42-8 record and a 0.97 earned run average in 2009. She struck out 521 batters in 352 and two-thirds innings, allowing only 165 hits. She also batted .268 with seven home runs and 30 RBI.
The ESPY Awards honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year. Fans will determine winners in 37 categories through online and mobile phone voting, which began today and runs through July 11. Fans can vote for Lawrie, and on all the other ESPY nominees, at www.espys.tv.
