Jelmini, Clarke Sweep Junior Shot Put Titles at USA Championships

June 26, 2009

TEMPE - Two competitors with ties to the Arizona State University track and field program won the shot put national titles in the junior division with two other competitors nearly making the world team in the senior shot put division as the second day of action at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Also on the day, the Sun Devils posted four other Top 10 finishes in the finals of three other events with two others advancing to the finals of their respective events.

Incoming freshman Anna Jelmini led of the day for the ASU contingent with her win in the women's junior division of the shot put as her toss of 16.15m (53-00.00) claimed the crown by over three feet. ASU completed the sweep of the junior division shot put event as Jordan Clarke, who redshirted his freshman year with the program this past season, won with a meet-record toss of 20.46m (67-01.50). With their wins, both Jelmini and Clarke have earned berths into the 2009 Junior Pan American Championships at the end of July in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

In the women's senior shot put event, two Sun Devils almost cracked the Top 3 to earn a spot in the world championships later this summer as Jessica Pressley and Sarah Stevens finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Pressley recorded a best toss of 17.81m (58-05.25) while Stevens, the 2009 Pac-10 Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Year, hit a mark of 17.69m (58-00.25).

Other field event competitors on the day included Cara Carpenter in the women's junior pole vault and the duo of Ryan Whiting and Jason Lewis in the senior men's discus. Carpenter, who recently completed her freshman season with the program, cleared 3.90m (12-09.50) to finish fourth overall. Whiting took 18th in the discus with a toss of 57.10m (187-4) while Lewis did not record a mark in his three attempts.

One day after placing sixth in the final of the women's 10,000m run, Amy Hastings returned to the track and took 10th in the 5,000m run as she ran 15:52.37. In the men's final of the same event, Brandon Bethke took 15th with a time of 13:59.47. Two women advanced to the finals of their events on the track as Latosha Wallace ran 56.78 to place eighth in the semifinal of the women's 4000m hurdles while Lisa Galaviz ran 9:59.74 to rank eighth overall in the first round of the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Marcus Brunson was the only runner that did not advance from his semifinal run as he finished 13th in the 100m dash at 10.25.

The Sun Devil program will see 14 different competitors take to the track and in the field, including three men in the finals of the long jump and three more in the finals of the steeplechase. Set to compete for the men will be Clarke (junior men's discus final), Lewis (senior men's hammer final), the trio of Dwight Phillips, Trevell Quinley and Matt Turner (men's senior long jump final) and the trio of Aaron Aguayo, Kyle Alcorn and Ryan Warrenburg (senior men's steeplechase final). The women will be represented by Jelmini (junior women's discus final), Shakeia Pinnick (junior women's heptathlon final and junior women's 400m hurdles first round), Kayla Sanchez (junior women's 400m hurdles first round), Charonda Williams and Dominique' Maloy (senior women's 200m first round) and Wallace (senior women's 400m hurdles final).
