Michaels Edged 1-Up at USWAPL Quarterfinals

June 26, 2009

UCLA junior Sydnee Michaels made a bogey at the 18th hole and lost 1-up to Joanna Coe of Mays Landing, NJ at the 33rd U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.

At the turn, Michaels held a 2-up lead, but Coe birdied the par 5 10th and the par 3 11th to square the match. Both players halved the next six holes -- even matching birdies at the 16th.

All square at the par 5 18th, Michaels' third shot flew the green into heavy fringe. Coe was in a greenside bunker in two. Michaels missed her chip and failed to make the green; Coe blasted out to within 25 feet. Coe, hitting first, lagged her putt to within a foot and made par. Michaels, needing to make her chip to send the match to extra holes, missed again and settled for a bogey six.

Coe played the inward nine in three-under par with the usual match play concessions.
