California's Sebastian Sam placed second in the prelims of the junior 800 meters on Saturday at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Sam, who will run in the final tomorrow afternoon, was the only California athlete competing in the third day of the competition.

Sam clocked a time of 1:50.77 in the heat. Joe Abbott of Washington State took first with a time of 1:49.78. The junior 800-meter final will take place tomorrow at 4:25 p.m.

'I just tried to get out at a regular pace, and then improve my position from there,' Sam said. 'I got out like I wanted, I pushed on that back stretch. The last 150, I pushed coming around that last curve. I looked up at the board and realized I had a large lead, so I was able to shut it down.'

The USATF Outdoor Championships conclude tomorrow.
