New Faces On Deck

June 29, 2009

TUCSON - After signing an already stellar freshman class for the 2009-10 season, the Arizona swimming and diving program received a boost when several talented student-athletes decided to transfer and swim/dive for the Wildcats.

Erin Campbell and Hannah Ross, formerly of the University of Washington, decided to transfer after the Huskies swimming and diving program was lost due to budget cuts according to its athletic department.

Campbell, a Chandler, Ariz. native, garnered a total of 25 individual points this year at the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. The former Husky placed 5th in the 200 backstroke, 11th in the 100 back and 12th in the 100 butterfly. Campbell also swam on three relays for Washington which scored points.

Ross of Pocatello, Idaho swam on two point-scoring relays at NCAA's as just a freshman and earned an honorable mention in the 200 backstroke, placing 16th overall.

With Ana Agy and Jenny Forster both returning along with the new additions of Campbell and Ross, Arizona should have quite the backstroke foursome. Agy placed fourth in the 200 back and fifth in both the 100 fly and back in College Station.

Another transfer joining the `Cats this year is former Utah Ute Whitney Lopus. Lopus is a Scottsdale, Ariz. native and swims butterfly and individual medley. An Olympic trial qualifier in the 100 and 200 back this past summer, Lopus will be a much needed asset.

Not to be outdone by their female counterparts, the Arizona men picked up two key acquisitions when Craig Jordens and Cameron Owen joined the team.

Jordens, following in the long line of South Africans to swim in Tucson, transferred from Limestone College in South Carolina. The Cape Town, RSA native will provide an immediate boost to Arizona's sprint freestylers and relay teams.

Owen, a freshman last season for the Indiana Hooisers, swam the school's third fastest time in the 100 free with a 43.59. Along with freestyle, Owen will also compete in butterfly and I.M. events.

Moving to some of the freshmen Arizona has coming in, diver Sam Decker looks to have a big influence amongst the diving squad in 09-10. Teaming with returners Ben Grado and Andres Guerra, Decker is primed for success.  Other notable freshmen on the men's team include Carl Mickelson and JD Schneider.

Over on the women's team, Monica Drake and Ellyn Baumgardner are sure to provide a spark to an already explosive team. ranked Arizona's women's recruiting class as seventh overall in the nation and the men were slotted at No. 18 after adding select pieces to a senior-heavy group.
