WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Stanford Rowing was once again a big winner on the national stage over the weekend, this time at the USRowing National Championships in West Windsor, N.J. as Cardinal alumni took home 13 medals. Of the haul, three were gold, six silver, and four bronze.
The 13 medals were earned by eight current and former Stanford rowers, while one rower, Jake Cornelius ('06), collected three medals (one gold, two silver), and three rowers, David Banks ('06), Elle Logan ('11) and Sebastian Peterlin ('11), took home two medals apiece. The remaining four medals were won by Aaron Frankel ('10), Steph Morrison ('08), Mark Murphy ('09) and Alex Osborne ('09).
'Stanford rowers continue to excel in the national and international races,' said Stanford director of rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. 'Our Buck Cardinal supporters should be proud and excited about these 2012 Olympic candidates.'
Cornelius won his gold in the men's four as his boat clocked a winning time of 6:03.712 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of the silver medal-winning U.S. boat that featured Murphy and Peterlin. Cornelius would collect his two silver medals in the men's pair and men's eight competitions, respectively.
Banks, a 2008 Olympian, was also part of the silver-medal winning men's eight boat with Cornelius, but in the men's pair competition edged his Cardinal classmate by just over three seconds to take home the gold medal.
Along with the silver medal earned in the men's four competition, Peterlin also won bronze as part of the third-place U.S. boat in the men's eight, a crew that also included Frankel. Fellow Cardinal rower Osborne was part of the gold medal-winning men's eight crew that crossed the line with a victorious time of 5:38.797, as less than three seconds separated the first- and third-place boats.
Logan, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist as well as a Pac-10 and NCAA gold medalist during the 2008-09 collegiate rowing season, added more medals to her collection after claiming silver with the women's eight and a bronze medal in the women's four competition.
Completing the Stanford medal winners was Morrison, who was representing Canada's London Training Center. Morrison was part of the Canadian women's eight that claimed the bronze medal in its class.
