UCLA's Trevor Bauer Named Freshman All-American by Baseball America

June 30, 2009

DURHAM, N.C. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer of the UCLA baseball team has earned first-team Freshman All-America honors from Baseball America, the national publication announced Tuesday. Bauer becomes the third UCLA ballplayer in four seasons to secure Freshman All-America accolades from Baseball America.

Bauer went 9-3 with a 2.99 ERA and two saves for UCLA in 2009. The freshman right-hander from Valencia, Calif., registered 92 strikeouts and 27 walks in a team-leading 105.1 innings. Bauer enrolled at UCLA in January 2009 after having graduated one semester early from Hart High School. He began his freshman campaign pitching in the bullpen before earning a spot in the starting rotation.

Bauer is joined on Baseball America's Freshman All-America first team by starting pitchers Sean Gilmartin (Florida State), Taylor Jungmann (Texas) and Noe Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton). Bauer is the only freshman from the Pac-10 Conference to earn first-team Freshman All-America recognition. Two Pac-10 pitchers were named second-team Freshman All-America selections (Sam Gaviglio, Oregon State; Mitchell Lambson, Arizona State).

Bauer has also earned Collegiate Baseball's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year accolades in addition to having secured Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors.

In Pac-10 games, Bauer went 7-0 with a 2.98 ERA and a team-leading four complete games. He struck out 54 batters and issued 14 walks. As a starting pitcher, he went 7-0 with a 3.16 ERA, recording 67 strikeouts and 19 walks while limiting the opposition to a .217 batting average. He twice earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors.

Bauer ranked third among Pac-10 pitchers in innings pitched (105.1), tied for fourth in wins (9), seventh in ERA (2.99), eighth in strikeouts (92) and ninth in opponent batting average (.225). In addition, he tied the UCLA record for most wins by a freshman pitcher (Pete Janicki, nine wins in 1990).

UCLA's recent Freshman All-America selections (Baseball America) include Gabe Cohen in 2007 and Brandon Crawford in 2006.

Last Wednesday, Bauer was selected to the USA Baseball National Team's 22-man roster.
