Charters Named To USA National Team

July 1, 2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Recent Washington graduate Ashley Charters, a three-time All-American who led the Huskies to the 2009 Division I softball National Championship, has been named to the USA Softball Women's National Team for the 2009 summer season.

Charters was one of 18 players selected to the National Team after a selection camp recently in Chula Vista, Calif. The roster represents a new era of USA Softball as there are only eight returning players from the 2008 Olympic Team.

The former Husky will don the Red, White and Blue for the first time in the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C., July 4-12, where she may face current Husky Danielle Lawrie, who will compete for the Canadian National team this summer. Charters and Team USA will then play in the KFC World Cup of Softball presented by Six Flags in Oklahoma City, July 16-20, which will air live on ESPN HD.

Charters was also named to the USA Softball Japan Cup Team, which will travel to Sendai, Japan, July 31-August 2 for a rematch against the Gold Medal-winning Japanese team.

The USA National Team will be under new leadership this year and Jay Miller takes over as head coach with Gordon Eakin, Ken Eriksen and Barbara Jordan serving as assistants.

Charters finished her illustrious career as a Husky as the school's all-time leader in stolen bases and tied for the all-time lead in triples while moving up to second all-time in hits and runs. She saved her best for last in her senior season, earning First Team All-America honors after batting .477 with a single-season school record 96 hits. She batted .471 in the Women's College World Series, earning All-Tournament honors and leading the Huskies to the National Title.
