July 9, 2009
USC will run in five regular season meets and three postseason meets in 2009, including the Pac-10 Championships which the Trojans will host on Oct. 30 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif. it was announced today (July 9) by USC cross country coach Tom Walsh.
'We are looking forward to hosting the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, the first time we have hosted the conference championship since we did so in 1999 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach,' said Walsh. 'We've also added the Stanford Invitational on the schedule this year and that will provide us with an early chance to see where we stand compared to the top teams on the West coast and will serve as our benchmark.'
USC returns virtually all of its top runners from last season, including the clear leader of the team Zsofia Erdelyi. Erdelyi is coming off an All-America season in track and and is expected to team with Shea Wickland (first cross country season) and Bridget Helgerson as the Trojans top three runners.
'Last season the team over-achieved and had an excellent season,' said Walsh. 'We were very close to fifth place at the Pac-10s, the toughest conference in the country, and the girls are hungry to prove that they belong in the top five in the Pac-10.'
USC has also added Mt. SAC transfer junior Christine Cortez and freshmen Kelly Owen and Christy Ambrosini to the team. Cortez placed second at the 2008 JC State Cross Country meet with a time of 18:06, Owen has run 5:00 for 1600m and Ambrosini ran 4:39 for 1500m during the 2009 high school track season.
