Four Bears Qualify for Under 23 World Championships

BERKELEY - Four members of the California men's crew team were named to the 2009 U.S. Under 23 National team that will compete at the 2009 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, as announced by USRowing on Monday. Sean Engel, James Long-Lerno, Nareg Guregian and Nick Lucey will be competing. In addition, assistant coach Luke Agnini will be coaching the U.S. lightweight men's four without coxswain (LM4-).
Engel will row on the men's quadruple sculls (M4x), Lucey on the men's eight (M8+), and Long-Lerno and Guregian will compete on the men's four (M4-).
This past season, Lucey and Guregian rowed on the varsity eight that placed second at the IRA Regatta last month. Also at the Regatta, Engel and Long-Lerno participated on the second varsity eight that placed third.
Twenty-one crews will represent the United States at the world championships scheduled for July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic. World champions will be crowned in a total of 21 events.
Former head coach Steve Gladstone will also be a part of the U.S. staff, coaching the men's eight that Lucey is rowing on.
