Recognition Continues For 2009-10 Wrestling Newcomers
July 13, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - The honors continue to roll in for the Stanford wrestling team's eight newcomers. After being deemed the nation's 15th-best class by D1CollegeWrestling.net earlier this summer, the group of seven freshmen and one transfer was recently also deemed among the top 20 by TheOpenMat.com (No. 16) and Intermat (No. 16).
The seven rookies include Ryan Mango (St. Louis, MO/Whitfield School), Bret Baumbach (Council Bluffs, IA/Lewis Central), Kyle Meyer (Monett, MO/Monett), Jordan Gray (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), Sam Umlauf (Wausau, WI/Wausau West), Richard Kessler (Whitewater, WI/Elkhorn Area) and Anthony Degani (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake Central).
Three of the seven newcomers - Mango, Meyer and Baumbach - were ranked among Intermat's Top 100 Seniors earlier this year. Mango was the top-ranked 119-pounder and the nation's No. 9 recruit at all weights. Meyer was ranked No. 11 nationally at 152 pounds, while Baumbach was ranked ninth nationally at 135 pounds.
The seven freshmen have combined for twelve state championships, five runner-up finishes, three third-place finishes and numerous high school All-America honors and national titles.
Joining the seven incoming freshmen is transfer Dylan Rush, a highly-touted heavyweight who will bring much needed depth to the Stanford upper weights. A three-time Hawaii State Champion and three-time high school All-American, Rush was the nation's ninth-ranked high school heavyweight in 2006.
