Stoops Touts Defense in Radio Interview
July 13, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. – As the Arizona Wildcats continue to count down the days to opening of their football fall training camp, head coach Mike Stoops found some time to chat with Tim Brando in a recent interview on Sporting News Radio.
Stoops highlighted the Arizona defense, which ranked third in the Pac-10 in total defense a season ago (one yard per game behind Oregon State at No. 2). Entering his sixth season as head coach, Stoops thinks of highly of his eight returning starters on the defensive side of the ball and hopes to see continued improvement this season.
After leading Arizona to a Las Vegas Bowl victory, Stoops hopes the win can carry momentum into the 2009 season and provide confidence to his team during voluntary off-season workouts that players are currently taking part in. According to the coach, the period between now and the start of the season is when the leadership, depth and character of the team will be built.
While a quick look at the early-season schedule might lead one to look at road trip to Iowa – Stoops’ alma mater – as the most intriguing non-conference game, Stoops quickly points out the importance of UA’s season-opener against Central Michigan.
The September 5 showdown in Arizona Stadium will pit Arizona’s experienced defensive unit against a CMU offense that has average no fewer than 29.5 points per game over the last three seasons. The Chippewas have played in three consecutive bowl games, have one of the most highly-touted quarterbacks in the country and feature two of the nation’s more proven wide-receivers.
Arizona will open its 2009 Fall Training Camp on August 4 as the newcomers report. The first practice will be held on August 6.
