Lewis Named USTFCCCA Indoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
July 14, 2009
TEMPE – Jason Lewis and 11 other members of the Arizona State University track and field program have been selected to the U.S. Track and Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic teams, the Association announced this week, with Lewis also being selected for one of the top honors. The 2009 NCAA indoor weight throw champion, Lewis was selected as the USTFCCCA Men’s Indoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, one of eight national academic honors handed out following each track & field season.
For Lewis, it is his first national scholar-athlete of the year accolade and gives the Sun Devil program at least one honoree at that level in each of the last four seasons. Last year, both Ryan Whiting (men’s indoor field) and Sarah Stevens (women’s outdoor field) were selected for the award after Stevens was the 2007 women’s indoor field selection. In 2006, Victoria Jackson earned the first award in the program’s history as she was selected as the women’s outdoor track recipient.
Both Lewis and Whiting were selected to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team and led the way for a program-record seven selections this year. Also selected for the men’s honor were Brandon Bethke, Ben Engelhardt, Jeff Helwig, Justin Kremer and Lawrence Trice. For the women, Stevens was selected for the fourth time in her career and was joined on the list by Ali Kielty, Dominique’ Maloy, Cj Navarro and Angela Spadafino.
This year, the men and women combined to have 12 student-athletes honored by the USTFCCCA after having 13 selected in each of the past two seasons. The seven selections for the men this year is the most in the program’s history while the women’s record is 10, which was collected in 2007.
In order to be selected to the all-academic teams, an individual must compiled a 3.25 grade-point average or better and have either qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships by attaining a provisional or automatic mark during the season or have reached the NCAA Outdoor Region Championships qualifying standards.
