Back To Work For the Cats
July 17, 2009
The 2009-10 season does not tip off for almost four months, but the University of Arizona women's basketball team gathered together for the first time as an entire unit to start summer classes as well as its preseason workout program.
The players came together as Wildcats this past Sunday and immediately began preparations for the second summer session of classes. The group also began meeting with the team's performance enhancement coach, Brian Odom, to get familiar with the Wildcat strength and conditioning program.
'I am really excited about having the team on campus,' said head coach Niya Butts, who showed the enthusiasm of a coach ready to tackle her second season in charge. 'We have a great mix of personalities on this team and I'm looking forward to working with them in the Fall.'
Though the team is not allowed to work directly with the coaching staff during the summer, they are able to work out with teammates. On-court activities include pick-up games and shooting workouts while also spending time with the CATS Academic team to assist in the transition for the newest members of the team.
'This will be a great time for everyone to get acclimated,' said Butts. 'The girls are all working hard in the classroom and to improve their skills on the court.'
The first chance to see the Wildcats in action will be Thursday, November 5 in an exhibition contest against Fort Lewis (Colo.) at McKale Center. The regular season home opener will take place on Monday, November 23 against Ole Miss. Tip-off time for both games has yet to be determined.
