WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The California and UCLA men's soccer teams were ranked in College Soccer News' top 25 preseason ranking, which was released this week. Three Pac-10 players also made CSN's Preseason All-America teams, including first teamers Cal's Andrew Wiedeman and UCLA's Michael Stephens, and San Diego State's Nick Cardenas, who was named to the third team.

Led by the 2008 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Stephens led the Bruins to their second-straight Conference crown and sixth in eight years. UCLA is ranked 17th in the preseason ranking after going 7-1-2 in Conference play last year, making its 26th-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bruins return eight starters from last year's team.

The Golden Bears are ranked in the top 10 in the preseason ranking, coming in No. 8. Wiedeman was a first team All-Pac-10 honoree last season, helping Cal place second in the standings. Returning nine starters in 2009, Cal advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual national champion Maryland.

With the help of Cardenas, a second team all-conference honoree last year, helped San Diego State place third in the Pac-10 last season.

UCLA and the Golden Bears head to the nation's capital to participate in the D.C. Area Classic. The Bruins will take on the defending national champion Terrapins on Sept. 4 in College Park, Md., before heading down the road to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 6. Cal takes on the Hoyas first on Sept. 4 to open the 2009 campaign, then closes out the weekend in College Park on Sept. 6.

The Aztecs open the new season against Loyola Marymount on Sept. 1.
