Several Golden Bears Performing Well in Summer Baseball

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Several members of the California baseball program are enjoying productive summers spread out across the country competing on semi-pro teams from the Cape Cod League in Massachusetts to the Hawaiian League in Oahu.
Sophomore-to-be Dixon Anderson (Piedmont, Piedmont High School), a 6-5 right-hander, plays for the Green Bay (Wisc.) Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League and has been selected to the South All-Star Team that will compete in the Northwoods All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 21 at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Anderson is currently 0-2, but has seven saves with a 2.53 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 32.9 innings.
Junior Austin Booker (Fairfax, Va., Robinson High School), son of Cal All-American Rod Booker (1979-80), is batting .318 (34-for-107) with four doubles, a triple and 10 RBI for the Vienna (Va.) Senators (25-7) in the Clark Griffith League. Booker also leads his team with 31 runs and 24 stolen bases. He was selected for the July 5 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League All-Star Game where he was 2-for-4 with two runs and three stolen bases, helping his CGL squad to a 10-6 victory over the MCBL squad as a designated hitter/second baseman.
Sophomore catcher/outfielder Chad Bunting (Ukiah, Ukiah High School) was named an All-Star in the Hawaii Collegiate League, playing for the Hawaii Aliis. Bunting is currently batting .303 (20-for-66) in 15 starts with three doubles and 11 RBI.
Junior Mark Canha (San Jose, Bellarmine College Prep), a 2009 All-Pac-10 first baseman/outfielder, is batting .257 (19-for-74) with two doubles, a triple, three home runs and 11 RBI in 22 games with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League.
Also competing in the prestigious Cape Cod League is junior Brian Guinn (El Sobrante, Berkeley High School), the son of Bear standout Brian Guinn, Sr. (1981-83), who is batting .212 (11-for-52) with a triple and six RBI in 16 starts at shortstop for the Cotuit Keetlers.
Sophomore outfielder Danny Oh (Mill Creek, Wash.) is hitting .252 (34-for-135) with four doubles, a triple, 13 RBI in 42 games for the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods League, while incoming freshman infielder Tony Renda (Juniperro Serra High School) is batting .258 (25-for-97) with nine doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBI in 28 games for St. Cloud.
Another Bear competing in the Northwoods League is sophomore right-hander Erik Johnson (Los Altos, Los Altos High School), who is 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA, and 41 strikeouts in 40.2 innings in six starts for the Alexandria (Minn.) Beetles.
Competing in the West Coast Collegiate League is sophomore Joey Donofrio (Los Gatos, Los Gatos High School), who is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in six starts (12 strikeouts in 28.1 innings) for the Bend (Ore.) Elks. Junior outfielder Dwight Tanaka (El Sobrante, Campolindo High School) is batting .276 (29-for-105) with five doubles, a triple and nine RBI in 29 games for the Kelowna (Wash.) Falcons in the West Coast League. Tanaka also leads his team with 22 runs and 13 stolen bases.
And finally, senior catcher Eddie Hsieh (San Jose, San Jose City College in 2007-08) is a teammate of Tanaka's at Kelowna and is batting .231 (18-for-78) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 15 RBI in 22 starts behind the plate.
