Meet Wilder McAndrews

July 21, 2009

Wilder McAndrews has been battling an injury since last season when he tore the ligaments in his wrist and thumb. He has gone through two surgeries to try and repair the damage and is now looking forward to fall camp so he can get back on the field and fight for his spot.

How was it been coming back from your injury?

It's been a tough road. I have already had two surgeries and I am faced with making a decision about what I am going to do in the future. It has been a pretty tough road and it is hard to overcome it. Physically it is up and down, some days I feel good about it and some days I don't. Mostly it has been hard on me mentally just not being able to do stuff that I used to be able to do. I tore ligaments in my wrist and in my thumb. It was like having broken bones, but they wouldn't heal so I had to have surgery. The first one failed, so I had to get another one. I injured it during the first week of fall camp, but I played with a cast on during the regular season, and then I had surgery on it during the bowl week.

How did you get here, to playing football at Oregon State?

I am kind of like an orphan so I didn't have help getting exposure by going to camps and stuff, I didn't really see the importance of that. I walked on here my second year of college and ended up getting a scholarship, so that is how I got here. I have been playing football for a long time.

How has receiving a scholarship helped you?

It has definitely helped me stay here. It was really hard my first year getting money. They were looking at me in high school so that is why I decided to pursue college football over here. I thought it was the only shot I had at playing football in college.

What about pharmacy interests you?

It is pretty challenging. From day-to-day I think about if I should stay in this major because it is really hard, but I just keep trying and it works out every term. I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and I still don't. I figured I only have four or five years of school so I thought I might as well do something worthwhile and challenge myself. It would be pretty cool to be a pharmacist if I could get there.

Tell fans something interesting about yourself...

I like to go swimming in my free time.

If you weren't playing football, what sport would you be doing?

I would be going to school and focusing on getting my degree.

What is the most important thing every offensive tackle needs to know?

The most important thing an offensive tackle needs to know is the stances, the defensive ends and where the safeties are.

Who are you in a nutshell?

I am a guy trying to find his path in life. I am trying to find where I am going to end up and I don't really know yet. Being here has helped me paint a better picture. Being here has helped give my life a lot more structure and purpose. The team and the school work is a symbiotic relationship; it all works together.

What was it like growing up in Hawai'i?

It was good and bad at the same time. Life is good there; you don't really get to see all the bad aspects of the whole world because you are so isolated and far from everywhere else, so you just get all the good stuff. It's pretty much paradise over there. Over here it's a lot bigger and it is hard for your mind to adapt coming from such a small and isolated place. When we get here it is a lot bigger with the movement of everything.

Was it a culture shock moving from Hawai'i?

Oh yeah. The food is what I miss the most about my home because there are so many different cultures and you can get whatever you want. I like Korean food a lot. I could eat that every day.

Do you have any embarrassing habits?

I like to play video games a lot. That is kind of embarrassing. My favorite video game is Street Fighter.

What should fans expect with this upcoming season?

I am going to try and persevere through my injury and be ready for fall camp and go from there. I am going to try and get my spot back.
