Welcome Wednesdays: Meet Camille Saxton

July 22, 2009

The Oregon State volleyball program, under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Taras Liskevych, welcomes six freshmen to the 2009 squad. Camille (pronounced Kuh-MEE) Saxton, a 6-0 outside hitter from Balzac, Alberta, Canada was the second to sit down to answer questions in a six-part series “Welcome Wednesdays,” where a new member will be featured on www.osubeavers.com. Volleyball is a big part of the Saxton family with parents Don and Mylène owning Volleydome in Calgary after completing Canadian National Team playing careers.

You played beach and court volleyball growing up. Which one do you prefer?

I like court better because I like having more people on my team. It’s more physical, too.

Your whole family played volleyball at some level. Have you always been interested in volleyball?

I was introduced to volleyball when I was really young, like five years old. But I also played basketball and soccer. But then I decided that I probably liked volleyball the most in grade eight.

How has the transition been coming down to Oregon State?

Everyone has been so nice already. It’s easy to feel at home here. There was only one day that I felt nervous, but now I feel that I can live here.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I’m looking forward to getting used to being on my own, meeting new people and learning what I want to pursue in classes.

What are your personal goals this season?

I just want to improve and get to know the team really well. I’ll hopefully work my way onto the court more as the season goes on.

What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss my friends a lot, my family and living at home. But I have to move on.

Did you know Terry before? What made you decide on Oregon State?

I met him two or three years ago. So then he was introducing me to Oregon State volleyball. I came to visit in October two years ago, and I really liked it then. That was when I had more of an idea that I wanted to come here because of Terry and the whole coaching staff being so nice. And I met the team, too, and then I signed because I liked everything about it.
