July 26, 2009
UCLA sophomore Eder Arreola led the Cherif Zein Elite 17-under boys' soccer team to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship on Sunday morning, scoring the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over North Carolina's Triangle United to help his team capture the Don Greer Cup.
Arreola's goal in the 26th minute gave his squad a 3-0 lead, and CZ Elite held on for the 3-2 win. Triangle United scored two goals in the final two minutes of the contest and nearly tied the game in stoppage time, but the potential game-tying header was deflected by CZ Elite's goalkeeper and ricocheted off the crossbar just as time expired.
Arreola dominated in the tournament, leading all goal scorers with five goals. In CZ Elite's opening game on Wednesday against the Dallas Texans Houston Red, he gave his team a 1-0 lead with an 18th minute goal, and CZ Elite finished with a 2-2 tie. On Thursday, he scored another goal in a 4-0 win over Kentucky's Javanon Soccer Club, and he scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute, on Friday in a 2-1 win over Pennsylvania's YMS Xplosion to lead CZ Elite to the title game.
Last season, Arreola totaled one goal and six assists in 20 games played with the Bruins.
