July 26, 2009
RACICE, Czech Republic - Stanford men's rowing claimed a medal at the 2009 World Rowing Under 23 Championships Sunday, as Mark Murphy '09 helped row the U.S. men's four (M4-) to the silver medal in the 'A' Final. Fellow Stanford oarsman Sebastian Peterlin '11 was part of the U.S. men's eight (M8+) boat that took seventh overall by virtue of a victory in the 'B' Final of the event.
'Mark stroked a great race for the U.S. straight four. He proved clearly he is a candidate for our U.S. Olympic Team in 2012,' said Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. 'Sebastian gained enormous international rowing and racing experience. I am confident he will have great success in future for Team USA.
Murphy and the men's four finished second in the third preliminary heat, then took third in the first semifinal Saturday to claim the final qualifying spot in the championship from that race.
In the 'A' Final, the U.S. ran third through the first 500 meters before dropping a place to fourth through the next 1,000 meters. Yet in the final 500 meters Murphy, in the stroke seat, and the rest of the U.S. crew made a dramatic sprint to the line that succeeded in nipping Canada and Germany by less than a second for the silver medal and falling just 1.31 seconds short of the gold medal-winning boat from New Zealand. The U.S. time of 5:55.80 ended up edging Germany and Canada by 0.42 and 0.69 of a second, respectively.
In the men's eight event, Peterlin and the U.S. crew started out by taking third in the second heat of the prelims, which sent it to the repechage round for a second chance at a spot in the 'A' Final. Yet there, the U.S. just missed out on the final spot in the championship, finishing third.
In the 'B' final, though, the U.S. bounced back, taking the lead in the second quarter of the race and cruising to a 6.03-second victory in a time of 5:37.11 to claim seventh overall in the competition.
With his silver medal, Murphy adds to his 2008-09 collection which includes a silver at the Pac-10 Championships and a national bronze medal at the IRA Championships.
