Wildcats in Rome
July 26, 2009
ROME – The swimming events of the 13th World Championships kicked off Sunday with several Wildcats in the outdoor Foro Italico main event pool in Rome.
The highlight of the day was the men’s 4 x100 free relay, where six participants who have either swum at UA or under head coach Frank Busch were in the final heat. Nicolas Nilo, swimming for Brazil, went up against former Cats Roland Schoeman, Lyndon Ferns and Darian Townsend of South Africa and Simon Burnett of Great Britain as well as Busch trainee Matt Grevers for Team USA.
The race, the first international 4 x100 men’s relay since Jason Lezak’s comeback performance in Beijing to give USA the gold, saw the French team heavily favored again, but Grevers kept his team close after three legs. Cal’s Nathan Adrian then sealed it for the American’s during the anchor leg and was able to win gold and upset France again.
Nilo and the Brazilian team took fourth while the Wildcat-led South African’s tied for fifth with Italy. Burnett and Great Britain finished seventh overall.
In individual events, Albert Subirats qualified for the final heat in the 50m butterfly while Schoeman just missed, finishing ninth in the semifinals after turning in the top time in opening preliminary heats.
2009 NCAA Individual champ Jean Basson finished 13th overall in the men’s 400m freestyle. Only the top eight in the 400m free advanced to the final heat on Sunday.
In the men’s 100m Breaststroke, Tucson’s Josh Arreguin took 57th with a time of 1:02.58
Tomorrow, Nilo, Basson and Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or will look to keep up with Phelps in the men’s 200m freestyle while Grevers and Jake Tapp swim in the 100m backstroke event. Subirats will also swim in the final of the 50m fly.
