July 27, 2009
Oregon State men's golfer Morten Madsen has been busy this month ... busy playing some of the best golf of his life. Madsen, a sophomore-to-be, from Silkeborg, Denmark won two tournaments in July and was the runner-up in another as he traveled through his home country.
Playing in the Message Elitecup for Herrer, July 11-12, Madsen sank 15 birdies in the two-day, 54-hole tournament to finish with a 9-under 204, including eight birdies in an 8-under 63 final round. His final round 63 gave Madsen a four-shot victory over runner-up Nicolaj Norman Hansen at the 6,502-yard Hjorring Golf Club near Vinstrupvej, Denmark. He tallied eight birdies in the final round including the par-5 seventh and 16th, the par-4 10th, 13th and 18th, and the par-3 fifth, 12th and 17th.
The next weekend, July 17-19, Madsen notched a bigger win earning the victory in the Danish International Men's Amateur Championship at the par-71 Silkeborg Golf Club. Madsen fired a 3-over 287 to finish one stroke ahead of fellow Dane, Daniel Lokke. Madsen recorded nine birdies in the four-round tourney.
Last weekend in the Danish Stroke Play Championship, Madsen finished second despite a three-stroke lead heading into the final round at the 6,171-yard Fureso Golf Club near Birkerod, Denmark. Madsen finished with a 5-under 279 in the four-round tournament two strokes behind the winner, Andreas Harte. Madsen recorded 15 birdies during the weekend including four in the final round the par-5 third, and par-4 first, eighth and 16th.
