Mike Nixon Nominated For 2009 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team
July 28, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University senior linebacker Mike Nixon has been nominated for the 2009 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team, which honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
Nixon (Phoenix, Ariz.) is one of 106 nominees on this year's list. From these nominees, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will be responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams - one composed of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and a combined team representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.
Nixon volunteers as a student-athlete mentor at Harris Elementary School in Mesa, organizing activities and games for the children and meeting with them on a weekly basis. In addition, Nixon is on ASU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and he was recognized as a Sun Devil Star for his community involvement, participation and leadership as an ASU student-athlete.
On the field, Nixon has played in all 38 games over the last three seasons, leading the Sun Devils in 2008 with 90 tackles and five interceptions. His five interceptions tied for the Pac-10 lead. He has also been a Pac-10 First-Team All-Academic selection and an ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District VIII honoree each of the last two seasons.
This marks the second straight season that Arizona State has had a player nominated for this honor, as Keegan Herring was selected to the 2008 Good Works Team.
