Sun Devil men's golfer and sophomore-to-be Chan Kim, who played at Hamilton High School in Chandler, became the first Sun Devil since Scott Johnson in 1996 to win the 43rd Pacific Coast Amateur with a 17-under 217 (67-69-67-68). The four-day event, held at the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, concluded Friday after beginning play on Tuesday (July 28).

Kim joins a list of former Sun Devils to win the event that not only includes the 1996 PCA champion and two-time All-American in Johnson, but also four-time All-American and 1993 NCAA Champion Todd Demsey (1993 PCA champion), four-time All-American Billy Mayfair (1987 and 1988 PCA champion) and 1982 PCA medalist Tony Grimes.

Kim had one of the best freshman seasons in ASU history according to his stroke average of 72.20, the fifth-best by a Sun Devil freshman. He really played well down the stretch, especially at the NCAA West Regional as he tied for third with a 9-under 207 (71-67-69). He also posted a solid NCAA Tournament with 3-over 216 that tied for 23rd and included a 1-under par 70 in second round. He had six rounds in the 60s, including a 3-under 207 in Palo Alto at the U.S. Intercollegiate and had a 71.00 stroke average in final five tournaments of the year and finished in top 20 in each event. He also averaged 69.8 in the final round of his final five tournaments.
