COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former Husky volleyball great Christal Morrison will be taking her game to the beaches of Europe later this month as a member of Team USA. The USA Volleyball beach department recently announced Morrison as part of the Under-26 teams that will compete in international tourneys this summer.
'With 50 athletes in our June-July training program, we had an unbelievably strong group from which to choose,' said Ali Wood Lamberson, USA Volleyball's director of beach programs. 'Our goal for these athletes is not only to win medals at their events, but also to make an impact on the beach volleyball world and to be the future of the AVP and FIVB tours.'
Morrison, a native of Puyallup, Wash., will team up with Cayley Thurlby, a former setter who played collegiately at the University of Hawai'i from 2002-06. Morrison and Thurlby are the top U.S. team, followed by Brooke Sweat and Tealle Hunkus at No. 2.
The beach athletes have been training in Southern California with Eduardo 'Anjinho' Bacil, USA Volleyball's head beach volleyball coach with assistance from Jon Aharoni, USAV's coordinator of beach coaching and development.
The U26 women's teams can compete in either the FIVB World Tour event in Netherlands, Aug. 10-15 or Finland, Aug. 17-22.
